Our purpose was to assess the efficacy of intra-arterial nimodipine, a calcium-channel blocker acting mainly on cerebral vessels, in preventing delayed neurologic deficits in patients with symptomatic vasospasm.
In each, a judgment was made as to whether any late-developing deficit was due to spasm or other causes, and the deficits were graded. In general, the capsules should be swallowed whole with a little liquid, preferably not less than one hour before or two hours after meals. These results point to an involvement of L-type calcium channels in MPTP-induced dopaminergic neuronal death in experimental parkinsonism and more importantly provide evidences for nimodipine to improve mitochondrial integrity and function.
