Do not do this. I lost 35lbs in the first year and managed to maintain my happy 137 weight since. I don't think I gained weight though.I was on Depakote for about a year, it worked fine but I did gain a lot of weight on it.
I’m not on near as high of doses though. Is it safe to drink on? :( Hope you are doing and feeling better!
Depakote made me super dizzy and uncoordinated, leading to frequent and injurious falls.

I drank all the time while on valproate (alcoholic) but part of my treatment was liver function tests every month.The doctor who prescribed it should be ordering regular LFT blood tests just to make sure it isn't putting a huge strain on your liver.Yea, my physician is a psychiatrist, physiologist, and did a few studies into neuroscience. I’ve been officially diagnosed for over a year now, and you’d think all I would care about at this point is controlling the seizures. TL;DR: depakote can cause problems like most drugs, but so can bipolar or improper / inadequate treatment, and I really don't know enough to be able to tell you one is definitely the source of these problems.

I was also extremely moody (would loose my temper at the drop of a hat at times) and my wife often commented that it seemed I was a totally different person. I also lost half my hair, experienced continual muscle spasms, gained 15 pound (after no weight fluctuation in over 20 years), and experienced what I believe was liver pain. It also made me extremely tired all the time, I constantly fell asleep in class and driving was almost a hazard because I was so drowsy all the time.

I don’t really remember other side effects because it was the medication I was on right after I was diagnosed; that was a busy time for me.I have been on 2000 mg of Depakote, for several years before decreasing to 1500 and adding in zonagran, the only real side effects thatI had which was is very minimal was a memory recall issue, but that has gotten better over timeYes, I’ll be on Depakote, coming back to a lower dose of lamictal like I used to be on for anxiety/depression, and then on zonegran.

I also wanted to sleep all the time and stayed very tired. Once she reached 1250 mg she could not stop eating, seriously, she would eat non-stop.

JAE w T/CCarbamazepine 1000mg Divalproex 1250mg, Gabapentin 600mg Her neurologist switched her off of it because of this, plus it wasn't controlling her tonic/clonic seizures, even though it worked for her absence seizures.So yea, weight gain bad but it’s doing its job and I haven’t had any other issues.I really commend your mindset.
