The great Fort Tejon earthquake of 1857, with a ~350km long surface rupture, was the most recent major earthquake along the south-central San Andreas Fault (SAF). The earthquake left a surface rupture scar over 350 kilometers in length along the San Andreas fault. Of eight trees sampled, five showed damage or growth anomalies attributable to the 1857 event. We use a new approached to the topic: the research skills of a historian in collaboration with a geologist to generate quantitative data on the nature and location of ground shaking associated with the earthquake.
