People with dementia usually have lower levels of this chemical, which is important for the processes of memory, thinking, and reasoning. As cholinergic mechanisms may be at least partially responsible for hallucinations and delusions in Parkinson's disease (PD), we conducted an open study in 8 PD patients to assess the efficacy and tolerability of the cholinesterase inhibitor donepezil, 5 mg at bedtime for two months, in the treatment of these complications.

The most common adverse effects of rivastigmine related to cholinergic stimulation in brain and peripheral tissues are gastrointestinal, cardiorespiratory, extrapyramidal, genitourinary, musculoskeletal symptoms, sleep disturbances, and skin irritations with the transdermal patch form in particular.
