MEXICO CITY, Oct 12 (Reuters) - A new discovery of a major deposit of lithium and potash in central Mexico will turn the country into a producer of both materials, the small Mexican company who made the find said on Monday. The 50,000 hectare (124,000 acre) deposit in the central Mexican state of Zacatecas could hold up to 800 million kilos of lithium, the chief executive of Piero Sutti mining company Martin Sutti told Reuters.Lithium carbonate is the main component of the rechargeable batteries that power laptop computers, cell phones and digital cameras and demand for the metal could soar if carmakers raise production of hybrid cars or start manufacturing electric vehicles on a large scale.Sutti said the deposit also contains enough potash, used in fertilizers, to meet Mexico’s 150 million kilo-per-year demand and have some left over to export.“Mexico doesn’t produce any lithium or potash,” Sutti said in a phone interview.
