They work by binding to specific receptors on the cells, and each retinoid binds to a different set of retinoic acid receptors. Unlike tretinoin, adapalene does not bind to proteins within the cell.
Retinoids have been used since the 1960s, when they were discovered to have tremendous effects on disorders of keratinization.

Retinoids work by entering our cells and docking with receptors that are known as retinoid acid receptors.
Both drugs appear to be equally efficacious against closed comedones. 2002;69(suppl 2):12-19.
Unable to load your delegates due to an error Tretinoin is much older than adapalene, coming from the first generation of retinoids and being patented in 1957 before receiving medical approval in 1962. Accordingly, numerous clinical trials have compared adapalene and tretinoin in the management of acne vulgaris and concluded that tretinoin 0.05% gel exhibits a greater anti-acne efficacy than adapalene 0.1% gel, but has higher skin irritation potential.

Nevertheless, contrary to many dermatologists’ expectations, tazarotene is actually well tolerated in acne and a split-face study has demonstrated that the tolerability of tazarotene 0.1% gel is clinically comparable to that of tretinoin 0.1% gel microsphere, tretinoin 0.025% gel, and adapalene …
Adapalene gel was associated with fewer treatment-related adverse events than tazarotene cream (36% versus 58%, respectively), and less than half as many adverse events that were "definitely" related to study treatment than tazarotene cream (20% versus 45%, respectively).
Common Retinoids and Their Brand Names. It's prescribed generically, under various branded names, and as the active ingredient in medicines including Treclin , and is used across the world to treat various conditions. For this reason, some physicians and prescribers may suggest use of benzoyl peroxide in the morning and a retinoid (such as tretinoin or adapalene) in the evening. Copyright It is not applied during the day as the compounds are not typically stable in sunlight and can cause sun sensitivity and irritation. Preliminary results from the tazarotene versus tretinoin trial suggest that once-daily tazarotene is more efficacious than once-daily tretinoin in reducing the numbers of papules and open comedones, and achieves a more rapid reduction in pustules. This represents 2 arms of a 3-arm study. Tazarotene is the strongest topical retinoid, and like adapalene, it is receptor-selective.

I do get flaky but not as much as with tretinoin and I don't get as red. Another option is to apply moisturizers prior to applying topical retinoids. Adapalene, a derivative of napthoic acid, possesses similar biological properties of tretinoin, but has higher lipophilicity and increased photostability (i.e., stability in light). Tazarotene: This retinoid’s in the same weight-class as adapalene. The most commonly used prescription-based topical retinoids are tretinoin, adapalene, and tazarotene, but there are others that are used less often including alitretinoin. The efficacy and tolerability of tazarotene 0.1% gel in the treatment of acne vulgaris have been compared with those of tretinoin 0.025% gel and adapalene 0.1% gel in multicenter, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group trials. Please enable it to take advantage of the complete set of features! Retinoids are typically prescribed as a topical cream or a nighttime gel.
Preliminary results from the tazarotene versus adapalene trial suggest that, when tazarotene is applied only half as frequently as adapalene (every other day versus every day), the two drugs achieve comparable reductions in noninflammatory and inflammatory lesion counts.
